Science Made Sensible NSF GK-12 International Supplement

In spring 2009, we were awarded our first NSF GK-12 international supplement grant to bring our SMS program to South Africa. Four SMS graduate students, two SMS teachers, and the SMS program director piloted the international experience.  They conducted both marine and terrestrial ecological research in collaboration with the University of Pretoria and the University of Cape Town.  The team also spent a week working with middle school science teachers and students in the inner-city of Pretoria.

In spring 2010 and 2011 we were awarded additional international supplement grants to bring our SMS program back to South Africa. In August 2010 and 2011, three SMS teachers, two SMS fellows, and the SMS program director spent three weeks in South Africa engaged in educational and research activities comparable to the pilot year.
